Pat
Higginbotham.
Biography
Born
in Manchester, Pat’s
artistic career began after attending a Ceramics Course at Stockport
College taught by Derek Clarkson. This inspired a life-long enthusiasm
for all things to do with pottery and subsequently for painting.
The gradual acquisition of kilns and wheels, accompanied by several
residential courses at John Shelly’s slipware pottery in
Devon, set her on a course she still pursues with great vigour.
The original work was slipware pottery made for the kitchen
in earthy colours, followed by stoneware with ‘landscape’ glazing – and
some of these pots are still part of Pat’s production.
Alongside the domestic pots, Pat has developed a range of crackle-glazed
porcelain bowls and bottles which have become eminently collectable
- and have been purchased for the permanent collection of Manchester
Art Gallery.
Pat has exhibited widely in both solo and mixed shows, was a
member of the prestigious Red Rose Guild (featured recently in
Ceramic Review), and currently is a member of Northern Potters
and of Moving Clay. She has also enjoyed working with psychiatric
patients exploring the possibilities of clay as a therapeutic medium.
Lately Pat has progressed to larger work comprising sculptural
pieces for the garden. These are larger in scale and more robust – in
keeping with their intended setting – and make use of motifs
to do with the human form, with bird-life and with the beautiful
natural surroundings of Pat’s studio in the Cheshire countryside.
2005 has seen the creation of a series of digital
paintings with a ceramic theme. These make use of forms abstracted
from pottery and plants and are available in vibrant colour or
in neutral tones to suit all interiors. They are presented as canvas
texture on board or as prints on fine art classic paper for framing
by the purchaser.
